As A Dog Returneth To His Vomit

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.”
Proverbs 26:11

In this Proverb, God compares a sick dog returning and eating it’s own vomit to a person foolishly and repeatedly returning to his own sin.

  1. Whatever the dog ate in the first place did him no good.  His body rejected the meal and vomited it out.  Even so, sin does us no good.  We know from experience that sin does us no good.  Though there may be “pleasure” temporarily, yet there is never anything good that comes out of sin.  Heartache, regret, guilt, hurt, and destruction are the end results of sin. Sin is to be rejected from our lives.
  2. God views foolish sin as something repulsive.  Few things are as disgusting as dog vomit.  There is nothing pleasant or appealing about dog vomit. If we could only see our sin and disobedience for what it really is, disgusting foolishness.
  3. Returning to consume that which made the dog sick in the first place is extreme foolishness. For man to continually return to that which brought so much heart ache, emptiness, and pain is extremely foolish.

Praise the Lord that Jesus Christ can and will deliver us from any sin, regardless of how habitual or addictive it may be.  The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin! God’s Word, hidden in our hearts can keep us from sin.
